For the past 7 years my husband has been paying for benefits through his employer to the sum of about $2500 per year. The amount paid for many employees can be found on box 85 of their T4. He doesn't have a box 85 so several years back when we went to H&R Block they said they "didn't know" if he could claim it. YEP thats right they said they didn't know.
Well our taxes are pretty basic and easy enough to do so after that happened I figured what is the point in paying them over $100 to do our taxes when I can do it online for free or as little as $20.00 per return. So for the past several years that is exactly what I have been doing.
Well yesterday I decided it was time to get my taxes for 2012 finished when my husband comes home and tells me the guy he works with claimed all his benefits paid out when he went to H&R Block, so I immediately opened up google and did some research and found out we can claim his benefits (something I looked into several years ago, but did not get this information)
We have owed almost every single year and we wouldn't have. We have our work cut out for us as we have to now request his yearly benefit payments for the past 7 years from his employer and then get all our tax information together for the past 7 years for both of us and take it all to a tax specialist so they can do an adjustment of the past 7 years. What a nightmare, I feel so completely silly that I didn't know this but hopefully by me posting this I can help someone else who also was not aware of this
